Leo Shatters Opening Day Box Office Records
Thalapathy Vijay’s film Leo has made history at the box office. Previously, Shah Rukh Khan’s Jawan held the record for the biggest opening of 2023. However, Leo has now broken Jawan‘s opening day records with its historic worldwide earnings across five languages: Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, and Kannada.
Leo’s Pre-Release Earnings and Budget
The total budget for Thalapathy Vijay’s film Leo is ₹300 crore. Notably, the film generated significant revenue even before its release. Leo‘s digital rights for all five languages were sold for ₹120 crore. The satellite rights for the South languages fetched ₹70 crore, while the Hindi version’s satellite rights were sold for ₹30 crore. Additionally, the music rights for all five languages were sold for ₹18 crore. This totals ₹238 crore earned from digital, satellite, and music rights.
Furthermore, the all-India theatrical rights for Leo across five languages were sold for ₹125 crore, and the overseas market theatrical rights fetched ₹50 crore. Combining earnings from digital, satellite, music, and theatrical rights, Leo recovered a total of ₹413 crore before its release. This means the film’s makers earned a profit of over ₹100 crore even before Leo officially hit cinemas, against its ₹300 crore budget.
Record-Breaking Advance Booking for Leo
Leo experienced an unprecedented response during its advance booking phase, which began approximately eight days before its release. The film’s advance booking performance was the best for any Indian film to date, with Leo earning over ₹50 crore solely from advance bookings.
Leo First Day Box Office Collection: State-wise India Gross
On its first day, Leo has reportedly achieved significant gross collections across India. From Tamil Nadu alone, the film is estimated to have grossed approximately ₹33 crore. Andhra Pradesh and Telangana (Telugu-speaking states) contributed an estimated gross collection of ₹14 crore. In Kerala (Malayalam language), Leo grossed around ₹12 crore, and from Karnataka, the first-day gross collection stands at ₹14 crore.
Despite Leo not being promoted in the North Indian market and not being released in major multiplex chains like PVR, Inox, and Cinepolis, the film opened strongly in Hindi. Released only on single screens in North India, Leo recorded an estimated gross collection of approximately ₹5 crore from this region on its first day.
The total first-day all-India gross collection for Leo, encompassing all five languages (Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada), is approximately ₹78 crore.
Leo’s First Day Worldwide Collection and Opening Records
Leo has made an impressive impact in the overseas market as well, reportedly earning approximately ₹70 crore on its first day. This contributes to a massive worldwide total.
The first day’s worldwide gross collection for Leo is a staggering ₹148 crore. With this monumental figure, Leo has become the biggest opener of 2023. This performance surpasses previous 2023 opening day records: Adipurush previously held the record with approximately ₹140 crore, followed by Shah Rukh Khan’s Jawan with ₹127 crore worldwide on its first day. Thalapathy Vijay’s Leo has thus completely broken the opening day collection records of both Jawan and Adipurush.
