Red 2: First Day Box Office Blast and Performance
Superstar Ajay Devgn’s Red 2 made a significant impact on its first day at the box office. The film’s opening day collection surpassed the first-day openings of Akshay Kumar’s Kesari Chapter 2 and Sunny Deol’s Jaat. With entirely positive reviews, Red 2 is poised to become a major blockbuster at the box office.
The film was released on 3700 screens in India and approximately 1300 screens overseas, totaling 5000 screens worldwide. The budget for Red 2 was ₹55 crore, with Ajay Devgn being a co-producer, sharing profits 50-50 with Bhushan Kumar and not taking a fee for his role. Before its release, the film had already recovered ₹77 crore through the sale of digital rights for ₹40 crore, satellite rights for ₹27 crore, and music rights for ₹1 crore.
On its first day, Red 2 achieved an India net collection of ₹16 crore 50 lakh and an India gross collection of ₹19 crore 62 lakh. Overseas, the film earned ₹3.5 crore. This brought the first-day worldwide box office collection for Red 2 to ₹23 crore 12 lakh, earning over ₹23 crore globally. The film received a strong response in India and impressive collections from overseas markets. Morning shows across India recorded 35% to 40% occupancy, while afternoon, evening, and night show bookings were solid. The film is expected to maintain strong collections in the coming days and is highly anticipated to earn a ‘superhit’ tag within its first week.
Hit 3: First Day Worldwide Collections and Screen Count
Nani’s crime thriller Hit 3, released this week, saw a strong opening. The film premiered in five languages: Telugu, Tamil, Hindi, Kannada, and Malayalam, across 2700 screens worldwide. The Telugu version received the most screens, with Tamil also getting a decent number, and Kannada and Malayalam having a fair share. However, the film received limited shows in the Hindi market due to competition.
The production and promotion budget for Hit 3 was approximately ₹80 crore. Prior to release, the film had already recovered ₹72 crore through the sale of digital rights for all five languages at ₹54 crore, satellite rights for the Telugu version at ₹12 crore, and music rights at ₹6 crore.
On its first day, Hit 3 garnered blockbuster collections from its South Indian language versions. In Telugu states, the film received an excellent response, with many morning shows running houseful and solid bookings for afternoon, evening, and night shows. However, other regions outside the Telugu states saw an average response. The film’s first-day all-India net collection was ₹15 crore 10 lakh, with an India gross collection of ₹17 crore 85 lakh. Overseas, Hit 3 collected approximately ₹12.5 crore. This brought the first-day worldwide box office collection for Hit 3 to ₹30 crore 35 lakh, earning over ₹30 crore globally on its opening day, which is considered a fantastic opening compared to its budget.
Retro: Stellar Opening Day Box Office Performance
Suriya’s action thriller Retro, a Tamil film also dubbed in Hindi and Telugu, released this week to a blockbuster response. The film was released globally on approximately 3000 screens across its three language versions. Retro had a budget of ₹70 crore, with the cost of production being ₹65 crore and marketing expenses at ₹5 crore, as Suriya himself is a producer and his fee was not included in the production cost.
Before its release, the film had already recovered ₹83 crore. This includes ₹56 crore from digital rights sold to Netflix (with an additional ₹25 crore if worldwide collections exceed ₹300 crore), ₹19 crore from satellite rights, and ₹8 crore from music rights.
On its first day, Retro received a fantastic response in its home market of Tamil Nadu, with 12 AM shows going houseful and morning shows in the state opening at 70% to 75% occupancy. This performance surpassed Suriya’s previous film, Kanguva. Telugu states also saw a strong response, with morning shows recording 35% to 40% occupancy. Hindi collections, however, were expected to be low. The film’s first-day India net collection was ₹22 crore 50 lakh, and the India gross collection was ₹26 crore 78 lakh. Its overseas collection, including premiere shows and the first day, was approximately ₹13.5 crore. The first-day worldwide box office collection for Retro totaled ₹40 crore 28 lakh, surpassing ₹40 crore globally. With a low budget and strong opening, Retro is projected to be a major superhit for Suriya.
The Bhutni: First Day Collections Amidst Screen Crunch
Sanjay Dutt’s horror-comedy film, The Bhutni, released this week, faced significant challenges with screen allocation. Despite a decent trailer that was well-received, the film was released on a limited number of screens due to competition from other new releases. Worldwide, The Bhutni was released on only 750 screens, less than half compared to other films released this week, both in India and overseas.
The film’s budget was ₹25 crore, with Sanjay Dutt and his wife Manyata Dutt serving as producers. Prior to its release, The Bhutni had already recovered ₹33 crore through digital rights sales of ₹17 crore, satellite rights of ₹11 crore, and music rights of ₹5 crore, putting the makers in a profit of ₹7 crore even before the theatrical release.
The limited screen count significantly impacted the film’s first-day box office collection. Despite a good response in morning shows and decent reviews, the film’s first-day India net collection was approximately ₹1 crore 75 lakh, with an India gross collection of ₹1 crore 8 lakh. Overseas, released on fewer than 200 screens, the film collected ₹25 lakh on its first day. The total first-day worldwide box office collection for The Bhutni was ₹2 crore 33 lakh. With positive reviews, there is an expectation for a jump in collections on the second and third days.
