Dunky Box Office Performance: First Day Collections and Pre-Release Revenue
Shah Rukh Khan’s comedy-drama Dunky, directed by Rajkumar Hirani, was released globally across approximately 75,000 screens. The film’s production cost was 85 crore, with an additional 35 crore spent on promotion, bringing its total budget to 120 crore. This budget is noted as relatively low, partly because Shah Rukh Khan, as a co-producer, did not include his fees in it.
Before its release, Dunky generated significant revenue from its digital, satellite, and music rights. Jio Cinema acquired the digital rights for 150 crore, Colors TV bought the satellite rights for 57 crore, and music rights fetched 25 crore. This totals 232 crore in pre-release earnings, indicating a profit for the makers before the film even hit theaters.
Initial expectations for Dunky were high, with many anticipating a first-day worldwide collection of 100 crore and an opening larger than Shah Rukh Khan’s previous films Pathaan and Jawan. Early morning shows received a strong response. However, public reviews were mixed, with audiences finding the film neither exceptionally good nor particularly bad. This mixed reception impacted the film’s collections.
Dunky‘s first-day all-India net collection, based on early estimates, stood at 35 crore. The India gross collection for the first day was 42 crore. Including overseas premieres, the film’s first-day overseas collection was approximately 30 crore. Consequently, Dunky‘s first-day worldwide collection was reported to be only 60-62 crore. This figure falls short of Jawan‘s 130 crore opening and Pathaan‘s 106 crore opening, disappointing fans who expected a 100 crore worldwide debut.
Salaar Box Office: Dominant Advance Booking Figures
Prabhas’s action film Salaar, directed by Prashanth Neel, has demonstrated strong performance in advance bookings, surpassing Dunky‘s first-day collections even before its release.
Salaar‘s first-day advance booking across all five languages (Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada) in India reached 53 crore 40 lakh. This figure alone exceeds Dunky‘s first-day India net collection. The film’s first-day overseas advance booking collected 29 crore 10 lakh. Combining these, Salaar‘s total first-day advance booking collection reached 82 crore 50 lakh.
Furthermore, Salaar‘s weekend advance booking figures are even more substantial. For the initial three days (Friday, Saturday, Sunday), the India weekend booking stands at 63 crore 55 lakh. The overseas weekend booking is 49 crore 16 lakh. This brings Salaar‘s total weekend advance booking collection to an impressive 112 crore 71 lakh.
Box Office Clash: Dunky vs. Salaar Opening Trends
In the box office clash, Salaar‘s first-day advance booking collection of over 82 crore is noted as significantly higher than Dunky‘s first-day box office collection, which was in the range of 35 crore (India net) or 60-62 crore (worldwide). This indicates that Salaar is leading in terms of opening collection trends based on advance bookings.
A historical comparison recalls a similar clash in 2018 when Shah Rukh Khan’s Zero was released alongside KGF Chapter 1, with KGF Chapter 1 emerging victorious. Salaar is produced by the same production house behind the KGF films.
